We are excited to bring back Rhythm2Recovery training this year again to Ireland! Training is based on a model for engaging young people and adults with rhythmic music and reflective discussions to further social and emotional development and assist with managing adversity. No musical experience is necessary to deliver this work.
The training is packed with exercises, resources and themes to get better connected with those you work with. The training is practical, hands-on and great fun.

This model is used across a wide range of therapeutic settings and in individual, family and group therapy. Developed for counsellors who were struggling to engage individuals using traditional ‘talk based’ approaches, this model has proved a useful addition to the therapist’s toolbox and is backed by a significant evidence base. https://rhythm2recovery.com/evidence

It is fun, practical, and engaging and allows people to explore a wide range of life-skill and relationships issues in a safe context. It also draws on the latest neuro-science on how rhythmic music can reduce anxiety & assist with emotional regulation.

This program has been used successfully by counsellors and clinicians to work with people from many backgrounds, and for those who struggle with language. It has also been highly effective with young people and adults who find traditional talk-based approaches confronting.

Here is a link to a recent journal article explaining its use in family therapy and with people recovering from trauma https://rhythm2recovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Faulkner-2017-Australian_and_New_Zealand_Journal_of_Family_Therapy.pdf

    WORKSHOP

LOVE AND BIOLOGY, THE INVISIBLE RELATIONAL FIELD IN STEPFAMILY, BLENDED AND MODERN FAMILY SITUATIONS

    Mode: Online

    Date: Saturday 22nd November 2025

    Time: 9:30am – 1:30pm

    CPD Hours: 4

Fee: Early Bird: €65    Price: €80

    Workshop Abstract

As couples increasingly choose to separate, or co-parent, we are likely to come across stepfamily and modern family situations, either in our clients’ or our own families.  With a relational field that includes biological and non-biological relationships, parents, children, stepchildren, ex-partners, full and half siblings, these families are complicated and hard to navigate.  When they work well, they can look like a tribe or network rather than nuclear, with children having a mix of adults, parents and others, caring for them.  It takes time for this to develop.

The invisible field constellates around the natural connection between parents and their children.  It is more than love, they are part of each other, with children being experienced by the parent as a vulnerable extension of themselves. In most cases, this remains the same when parents have separated.  It is not the same for stepparents, and other adults who come into the family.  They are less likely to stay connected with their stepchildren if the relationship with their parent ends.  Step-parental love is more like that of a mentor, uncle or aunt.  However, love takes time to develop and as familiarity grows the stepparent and stepchild compete with the same person for love, attention and time, as if they were brothers and sisters.  Stepfamily couples often struggle with each other’s perspective, unable to hear each other, feeling protective of their children.

In this online workshop, I will raise awareness of the consequences of the different types of love in the stepfamily field and consider ways Gestalt therapists can make sense of the situation and support their clients.  As part of this we will learn how to look illustrate stepfamilies, showing where lines of attachment, identity and loyalty run, based on the relationship between parents and their children,  With presentation, exploratory exercises, discussion in small groups and the opportunity for  to work with me on either their own, or a clients’ situation, we will explore and learn about what supports stepfamily members to ‘blend’ (if that is possible) or flow with the invisible, relational, stepfamily field.

    Workshop Host

    Claire Asherson Bartram

Dr. Claire Asherson Bartram is a senior member of the Gestalt community and has been working as a Gestalt therapist for over 30 years. Over this time, while Gestalt has remained her base she has integrated other modalities, including developmental and attachment theory, family constellations and internal family systems.  She has trained in Developmental Somatic Psychotherapy with Ruella Franks.  Her practice based in North London is as a therapist, clinical and academic supervisor, working with individuals, couples, running workshops and facilitating groups.

Claire and her husband both have children from previous relationships, and the difficulties of this heralded her interest in stepfamily relationships.  At the end of her training, her placement was as a telephone counsellor for the National Stepfamily Association.  She found that stepfamilies were surprisingly challenging for others in the same way as they were for her and that there was a hunger for information.  The National Stepfamily Association closed and has been amalgamated with various parenting organisations.

Completed in 2012 her doctorate focused on 'Narratives of Mothers in Stepfamily Situations’ (2012).  Other publications include ‘Altogether Now’ about when Stepfamilies get together co-written with Cheryl Walters, and numerous journal articles.  She is currently writing a book for couples in stepfamilies, bringing together her learning from her work as a therapist and stepfamily research.
